Nansen Dialogue Center Skopje is pleased to announce the publication from the research “Multiculturalism and interculturalism in textbooks from first to fifth grade in primary education in the Republic of Macedonia”. The preparation of the document was realized with financial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway through the Nansen Dialogue Center Skopje and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Macedonia.

The research of textbooks used in teaching students from the first to fifth grade in the nine-year primary education was conducted in order to inspect the representation and manner of presentation of the cultural features and interaction between the different ethnic communities living in the Republic of Macedonia, as well as the presence of multicultural content that relates to a wider, global context. The identified situations make it possible to see if and how many textbooks sensitize pupils from early school age regarding diversity and encourage intercultural dialogue and collaboration. The obtained knowledge will provide directions for improving the quality of textbooks in terms of multiculturalism and interculturalism, and thus will contribute to building an intercultural educational environment in the Republic of Macedonia. The research uses combined qualitative and quantitative methods and procedures, and the results are presented by narrative descriptions, tables and illustrations with examples.

The analysis of textbooks from sixth to ninth grade in nine-year primary education is underway. The report on the analysis and research of textbooks will be prepared by the end of September 2017.

The publication is available in Macedonian and Albanian language.
